CRAFT DESKS
This project explores the potential social, political and economic opportunities from utilising the abundance of underused infrastructure that exists in towns and cities across the UK.
The project aims to create opportunities in areas that struggle to retain skilled, creative, local, young people (from secondary school to college age) by creating a space for them to test and incubate new ideas as well as meet other creatives with the inherent potential to foster collaborations and an inclusive learning environments.
This flexible, expandable multidisciplinary series of spaces was first conceptualised as stand alone "craft desks", some will exist in a test site, the Engine Room in an underused arcade in a coastal town in the North of England (Southport).
The craft desks are represented as "objects of facilitation" in orange, and "outputs/ products/ creations" in blue. The Engine room will also operate as a showcase, containing objects and being a literal "display wall" of at the least the physical productions of the Engine Room and the networks and community activities that operate through its "common room" hub space.
